British Caledonian and British Airways (Hansard, 4 November 1987)
HC Deb 04 November 1987 vol 121 c705W
Mr. Flynn

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry will make it his policy to take into account the potential impact of a British airline industry dominated by one carrier operating from both Heathrow and Gatwick on Cardiff and other regional airports before making his decision on the proposed merger of British Caledonian and British Airways.

Mr. Sackville

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry will take into account the potential impact of a British airline industry dominated by one carrier, operating from Heathrow and Gatwick, on Manchester and other regional airports before making his decision on the proposed take over of British Caledonian by British Airways.

Mr. Atkinson

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry will take into account the potential impact of a British airline industry dominated by one carrier, operating from both Heathrow and Gatwick, on Bournemouth International Airport and other regional airports in making his decision on the proposed take-over of British Caledonian by British Airways.

Mr. Cran

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if, when he takes the decision on the British Airways/British Caledonian merger, he will take into account the potential effect of a large British carrier on smaller independent air lines and their employees.

Mr. Maude

The proposed merger is being investigated by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Only if the commission concludes that a merger might be expected to operate against the public interest does my right hon. and noble Friend have the power to intervene to prevent or impose conditions on it. In such cases, he will take into account all relevant considerations in deciding what action, if any, may be appropriate.
